Night at the Improv!!

I am so very excited to be teaching improvisation as this year’s drama skill! Improvisation is not what most people think it is. It is a real skill that can be taught and learned by everyone, not just extroverts. Also it’s not just being silly. Students will not be asked to embarrass themselves to make others laugh.  So please keep reading to learn more about this class.

The skills learned during this 10 week semester will revolve around the theme of “Yes, and...”. Each week the students will take part in improv exercises that will challenge them to listen well to their team mates, problem solve, and think on their feet so they can “agree” and thus the story can move forward.

It has been said that “Improv boosts the 4Cs: Creativity, Critical thinking, Collaboration, and Communication.” Who wouldn’t benefit from that?

The semester will culminate with “Night at the Improv!”, a showcase where the students will engage in carefully selected exercises/games from our class time to highlight the skills they have learned. Participation for the showcase is voluntary but strongly suggested.

Parents, please note this class is a very free-flowing class. A certain level of maturity is expected. It is strongly suggested that you enroll your student only if he/she has the ability to continue working without direct supervision all of the time and can stay on task while having fun.

Theater Basics (fall only)

In this class we will explore the world of acting and take a look at what happens behind the scenes.  From week one of the class students will begin to discuss and prepare for our production of The King with Six Friends,  a children's book, by Jay Williams adapted for the stage.  We will look at costumes, build small scenery flats, investigate  the world of sound effects, and of course stretch our acting wings!  A wonderful adventure awaits  those enrolled in this class.
